CF Multiply: Week 3: Question of the Week

The question this week has to do with a problem that will face most of us at some point or another.  What do you do when you go out to eat?  What do you choose when you have no time and need to grab something quick?  Where do you like to go?  What is a favorite menu choice?  How do you alter it (if needed) to make it fit with your goals?

  1. I am terrible for going through the Del Taco drive thru. I always get a 1/2lb bean and cheese burrito with red sauce and a nacho with a diet coke or iced tea. Its quick when I'm on the run and I can eat it pretty safely while driving! Haha!!! We seem to always eat a lot of mexican food. I try to get a salad, but don't get the tortilla strips on it because I figure I eat enough chips and salsa that I don't need the extra chips. If I order a sandwich or hamburger I always leave the mayo off. I absolutely love Diet coke, and have a hard time not going through a drive thru while driving to grab one. But, this week...I will not have a Diet coke, because I need a real treat for my two treats for the week!

  2. When I go out to eat, I get whatever looks good and somewhat healthy in the smallest size possible. Honestly, I really don't go out to eat very often, so usually I let myself get something I enjoy and don't alter it. I never eat sauce or anything like that; I love everything plain! When I'm in a hurry I usually just don't eat (which I know is not good for you, and I'm working on it!) or grab an apple, my favorite in-a-hurry food. I can't even think of the last time I had fast food, and it actually disgusts me most of the time. I'm very picky about where my food came from and what's in it, so overall I just prefer to eat at home! :)

  3. We mostly go out to eat on a Sunday after church so Village Inn has been a regular spot. They actually have a very tasty Egg White Mediterranean Omelette with artichokes, fresh tomato, spinach, feta cheese and avocado. It's served with low fat granola and multi-grain pancakes. If we go out for lunch or dinner I try to eat a salad or something healthy! - Lori

  4. For my birthday my parents took me out, and I still needed a some veggie servings for the day so I ordered a huge salad with some tuna (the real kind that is almost raw). It was so good, I wasn't even jealous of my parents' dishes. So I think I will start trying to order more salads from now on. I really like asking for the dressing on the side because I think it reduces calories and it also makes it so you can save your leftovers without the lettuce wilting. I've been trying to pack snacks in my purse lately so I don't have to buy food, but in the past I've always gone for a bean and cheese burrito at Taco Bell. I don't know how healthy it is, but at least it has beans and is filling.

  5. I am a pretty picky eater but I usually resort to chicken caesar salads (with the dressing on the side so I can determine how much is used), which is also something I really enjoy or a turkey sandwich preferably with avocado. I think the one place I like that doesn't help my diet is Costa Vida, I do order a salad there as well, but obviously its not the healthiest of salads.

  6. After listening to a nutritionist speak at our dental convention two years ago, I became keenly aware of sodium and the extreme amounts put in all foods that are not cooked from scratch. Ken has high blood pressure and, at the time, I assumed my cooking was helping him and not hindering him. Once I started researching and reading labels in regards to sodium amounts, I was shocked that I was contributing to some of his HBP problems, and we have changed everything. So, because of being aware now of sodium, it makes eating out SO MUCH harder. We only need about 2000mg a day and a little less than that if you have HBP. We were so surprised at amounts of sodium in bread products that are not made at home. Usually upwards of 200 mg of sodium per slice of bread. When we do eat out it is a struggle to find something truly healthy, but I'll either try to find something as close to it's natural state or just make a decision to be miserable the rest of the day after eating so much sodium. Many restaurants have Nutritional Facts listed online and it is hard to find a meal less than 2000 mg of sodium. We do like Zupas (a lot) and they have salads that are fresh and you can ask for dressing on the side. Cafe Rio makes everything fresh, that is another good choice, because most of their meals can be divided into two meals. For grab and go, I like nuts, apples, green smoothies, Green Light mixed with water from Greensmoothiegirl.com, and occasionally some type of protein bar like a Clif Bar or a LARABAR (cherry pie is my favorite). Sweets is my downfall (as most all of you know:)), and if I don't really have anything ready and available then to the sweets I go!!!

  7. I'm with Brenna on not eating when I'm in a hurry, at the most it's a granola bar or leftovers! When there is time to sit down and eat properly my preference is always for something hearty. Hamburgers, Mexican, and Italian definitely top my list but lately I've been watching my portion size and the content of my meals.

  8. I normally eat a salad with a protein like grilled chicken or Salmon. I have a weakness for red meat so when we go out for steak I order a steak with salad and veggies. My quick on the go food is raw almonds, apples or a zone bar.
